3 biggest factors that have helped you grow in your career

Looking back on your career, what have been 3 key plays that have helped you advance or grow?

  • Share your wisdom with the community.
  • Learn from what your fellow members are saying.

The three biggest factors in my career that have helped me grow are:

  1. My boss putting me in a position I knew nothing about and forcing me to learn and retain any and all information I could gather.
  2. Being part of different communities, such as this one to be able to communicate with others and bounce ideas off of.
  3. My children and family members. I want to succeed in all I do to make my children and family proud. They always give me that extra push I need.

I am sure there have been more than three things that have shaped my career. Among those things is always family support and personal drive. I think the things that had the largest effect were having a mentor early in my career who through some sort of tough love drilled into me the concept of making sure the customer got what they came into the dealership for. When you failed to sell the vehicle you failed the customer. It forced an attention to detail that gave me the best chance to succeed. Another thing that shaped my career was my discipline to not become the stereotypical salesman. Honesty, integrity with the goal to do the right thing has allowed me to leave dealerships that do not subscribe to the same ideals and find those that do. Lastly as I have advanced in the career my willingness to continue learning and adapting to changing societal ideals and subsequently sharing my experiences with new salespeople has driven a continued growth.

My biggest factors where:

  1. Multiple INCREDIBLE Mentors
  2. Learning about HubSpot and diving deep into certifications as much as I could
  3. Caring about client performance and doing whatever I could do within reason to help contribute to that success.

  1. My genuine passion for what I do and “can do” attitude
  2. Great mentors and supervisors who cared about seeing me grow as individual
  3. A willingness to learn and open mind
  1. Never be afraid to ask a question, even if you may feel silly or less intelligent for not knowing something.
  2. Listen and learn from anyone who is willing to offer their expertise and “become a sponge.”
  3. Diversify yourself. The more you know about your area and your colleague’s areas, the more you learn to respect what others have to do and where your role and their’s align.

  3. Put in the work. This doesn’t mean hours, this is the mental work of being mentally present when you at work.
  1. Patience - it takes time to develop your skills and you want to make sur you really own them before jumping in the deep end to soon.
  2. Know your self worth and be able to apply that to every job you do.
  3. Listen and absorb as much info as you can from any and everyone because as they say, “Knowledge is power.” The more you know the more you are educated to talk on a specific subject so be that sponge and absorb as much as you can.
  1. I started at the bottom and worked my way up so I have an understanding of all job duties.
  2. I never ask anyone to do something I wouldn’t do myself
